Review: Mediteca Wine Tapas, KL
Being a rather lousy sibling, I offered my sister a birthday celebration using a GroupOn deal. That's the perk of being the only sibling. No matter how lousy you are, you are still the best they ever have :D Thankfully, my mother has gone past the child bearing age. Nobody to overshadow me and make me look worse (than I already am).
The place isn't very big but has a rather cosy atmosphere with Spanish tunes in the background. Perhaps it was still early but the music was a little too loud. The waiter obliged to our request to turn it down (without asking for what) as we just wanted to have a nice family dinner.
Nizzarda salad or nicoise salad. Fresh ingredients aside, the dressing was a little too heavy for my liking. Serving was quite large but this was for party of six and we were only five because my plus one is non-existent.
Mushroom and ham bruschetta. My past experience with bruschetta is usually lighter, with a sweet almost citrus kick that this was totally different. Savory and filling, it's good that each gets only one. Otherwise, you'd be quite stuffed from this alone.
Cubed potato with salsa brava sauce. Potatoes are one of my favorite carbs but these were unlike anything I've had before. For one, they didn't quite taste like potatoes. Perhaps a hint of it and the texture of mashed potato. Other than that, my tongue couldn't ascertain for sure if it is indeed a potato. The cube potato was slightly cheesy while the deep fried balls were a little dry.
Fried fish fillet and zucchini. Again, my brain was confused with my mouth.
The fish did taste like fish but zucchini was almost unrecognizable in a good way. Dry on its own, the accompanying sauce was good, not spicy at all.
Polenta bread and deep fried spring roll (skin). I don't particularly fancy the bread as it had that slight savory taste to it but the deep fried rolls were awesome like every other deep fried stuff.
Seafood paella. Like every other seafood dishes, this suffered from overcooking and the seafood ended up being slightly rubbery. On a plus note, it was indeed sweet from the freshness of the seafood. Perhaps paellas are meant to be wet and sticky but I prefer mine less so.
Pork platter: Stuffed, rolled, and roasted pork belly with mashed potato and baked vegetables.
By the time we got to this course, we were starting to feel quite full. Not sure if because we had one less person or the portion was indeed large. I think it's also to do with the food being rather rich.
Unlike the Chinese version, their roast pork's skin was so rough that it's impossible to chew/cut. Not that it was worth the effort. The meat itself had a hint of the herb marinate. Other than that, its main selling point would be the portion size. The vegetables were actually nicer with a hint of the grill and salt& pepper.
Apparently, they do have a (mini) buffet spread for less than RM 50. The waiter kindly brought us some sampling after we inquired. Having an ang moh certainly helps in getting (better) service. A low cut top does too. The buffet spread was actually not too bad with the basic Spanish food offerings. The cold cuts would probably have been worth the price.
What's a dinner without dessert? A sad one hence this creme caramel (RM 14). It came in a cute anchovy tin and not overly sweet. But after a rather good dinner, the dessert sort of fell flat (a bit).
What's a birthday dinner without a cake? So we got this tiramisu (RM 14).
The cake fared slightly better with more alcohol in the mix.
This is quite a nice place to bring your date to with its lowlights and good food.
