Located less than 5minutes away, Loong Foong gives Gold Dragon City a good dose of competition when it comes to Chinese new year dinner. It's quite unfortunate that we started the dinner with a not-so-good yee sang. I always thought that there's no such thing as a bad lou sang, Loong Foong has almost safely assured me that such a thing exists (sadly). Given my low expectation for this new year specialty, it's quite a feat for them to be able to serve one that I found to be almost not fresh (even those ready made ones can taste decent, this wasn't).

However, I have to say that the spice powder was put over the dry ingredients instead of the jelly fish, which was apparently the norm. All my life (may) have been a lie 😱How do you have yours?

If there's one thing that Loong Foong has an edge over Gold Dragon City, it'll be this: roast duck. They are so famous that reservations are advisable during the weekend. On weekdays, if you're there early, you can still get some.
True enough, it's worth the wait, thanks to the crispy skin with a bit of fat underneath. The meat itself did have a strong duck meat taste which some may not like. I almost didn't but only some pieces tasted like that.

Appetizer platter.
After the lou sang fiasco, I was hoping that they'll fare better with the actual dishes. Thankfully, this renewed my faith in them. At the bottom left is the dried oyster with pork ball, tied with some seaweed. I like dried oysters, I like pork balls, so yea. Fried pork and salted egg is to its rights. It has some mayo in the middle so kids (and adults alike) would enjoy this. Those yellow with brown edges on the top would be cheesy mayo scallop. Although I took this last, the scallop was surprisingly still warm in the cocoon of sinful cheese and mayo sauce. Mind totally blown away 😍Smoked duck in Thai chili sauce salad was a bit spicier but pretty bold move.

'Shark fin' soup with crab meat and mixed seafood.
I don't think that for RM 498 set, that'll be real fin. Soup was not bad with a dash of vinegar though not one of the best.

Chili steamed fish.
It looked quite harmless, like any ordinary steamed fish. How wrong that turned out to be. Continuing with a very non-traditional flavor profile, this felt like one of those Thai-inspired dishes. It was spicy with a hint of sourness, think it was lime. The fish was definitely fresh though I'm not sure if spicy Thai would have been the right way for it. I found it was a bit too spicy for a rather delicate fish.

Braised pork knuckle with mushroom and fish maw.
By then, we were reaching out limit and was looking at this with a bit of dread. Luckily (or not), it's not a big piece and came with a substantial amount of fat/collagen/skin. Flavor wise, not very earthy/mushroom.

Stir fried kailan.
I suspect Loong Foong likes to prepare Chinese dishes with a twist because even their vegetable is quite different 😄None of that oyster sauce with mushroom but with a bit more of lime? I don't know for sure. The crunchy ikan bilis was a nice touch though.

Individually packed glutinous rice with waxed meat.
God-sent truly because it meant we can easily do take away and can you just see it screaming meal prep? The rice was a bit too sticky though.

Deep fried lotus paste pancake with pandan mochi balls.
They used to serve these during Chinese wedding dinners. Oh how times have changed. I no longer have that many to attend nowadays. At the ripe age of 30something (cough cough), the people around me are either married already 👰 or will never 👵 I love these pancakes when they are done right i.e. crispy without being too oily or sweet and this brought back all those sweet memories of waiting for at least 1hour with nothing to do (cellphones not so cheap then) and trying not to fall asleep towards the end of the dinner.

The set also came with a lychee and sea coconut jelly drink. The perfect sweet ending.
