Plaza Batai is the new it place. The row is full of hipster joints where you can do your grocery shoppping up to having your hair done. Parking is available but chargeable. There's no outside/roadside/free parking so maybe Uber over. Bukit Damansara,

At first glance, I thought Ekkamai was a Japanese restaurant. So imagine my surprise to know it's actually Thai. Well, always game for something new. The place features both indoor and outdoor. We obviously picked the former because Malaysians though we had an ang moh with us. It wasn't very well lit inside so pardon the lighting. Lets just be thankful that it was my DSLR and not phone camera.
The menu features the usual Thai food. Mostly in the RM 20-30 price range. As it was my first time here, I left the ordering to my host who was more acquainted. Yes, there's a bar serving alcoholic beverages if you want something with a kick to go along with your tom yum.
Ekkamai is actually part of The Social group of companies. So, you can join as a member and get 10% discount when you dine here. That's a substantial amount if you're talking about more than 2diners.
We were there for a Sunday lunch, the place was not crowded at all. Quite perfect for a chilled lunch of catchup.
Something serene. Sorry, it's fake.
Thai milk tea RM 8.10
Their drinks menu do cater to the Westerners (which Asian would order cocktails, wine and beer with Thai food??) but also a section for non-alcoholics. They initially brought an iced version of this despite me wanting a hot one (my sister heard me too). Maybe they've never encountered a customer who has a cough for 2months and the last thing she
Stuffed Squid RM 24: grilled squid stuffed with chicken & prawns, marinated in garlic and coriander
The squid itself wasn't grilled till rubbery (good) but the filling was rather confusing (bad). It's supposed to be a chicken and prawn paste but I couldn't tell. Tasted like any usual meat paste and only the sweet chili sauce salvaged it.
ChiangMai Grilled Chicken Wings RM30: grilled chicken wings over hot coals, served with Thai dipping sauce, Som Tum papaya salad, and a little sticky rice
Sadly, I didn't manage to try the chicken wings but did enjoy the papaya salad which wasn't sour at all and was good with the sticky rice (that's hidden in that woven box).
Crabmeat & Petai Fried Rice RM38: premium crabmeat fried rice with petai (local pungent beans) and belachan dip
My father, being the typical Chinese man, was slightly annoyed that they served this in a round metal bowl, kinda like the kind used to serve dogs. I suppose it's just hipster-ism at work. At least it's not a toilet bowl. Presentation aside, the fried rice was quite nice, though I wished that it was fried a little longer so that it's drier. Not sure if I was late to the game but I didn't really taste any of the premium crabmeat 😓They didn't use much petai to have the taste in the rice but there were pieces of them here and there. For RM 38, it was quite a hefty price, crabmeat or not.
Duck and Lychee Curry RM34: roast or smoked duck breast slices curry with tomato, lychee & pineapple
Slices of smoked duck in a slightly sweet curry which is rather rich but not too spicy.
Tom yum RM 22: classic hot and spicy Thai lemongrass soup with tiger prawns
They have this Thai classic with different meat. I think the seafood ones would be better suited for the flavors. As you can see, their tom yum is not the clear type and is rather spicy. A bit sour with hint of lemon grass, the portion was enough to be shared among 4.
Beef Massaman Curry RM 34: tender brisket beef with new potatoes and caramelised shallots
For me, this was the best dish of them all. The curry was spicy while the beef was cooked until tender.
Red Ruby RM12: water chestnut pearls with jackfruit slices in coconut milk, on shaved ice
Don't be fooled by all that ice as there were quite a lot of the pearls underneath there. So much so that it's possible to have more ice and still the dessert would be just right. It was a bit too sweet from the jackfruit and coconut milk but desserts should be sweet, right?
Yup, beer. They also ordered iced lemon grass with fresh mint for RM 9. My father insinuated that he could make enough to drown them using RM 10 😂
Bubur Cha Cha RM12: Thai style bubur cha cha with yam, pumpkin, Thai pearls and sago jellies
Kinda like our local version but warm. A bit too sweet with a fair amount of coconut milk.
Not exactly an item on the menu but my sister's handiwork. Would you be interested to place an order?
