Chill chill break: The planning
After almost 5times, I finally relented and agreed to listen to their sales pitch with the promise of a free stay at one of their resorts. Eh, it wasn't all that free. There's the drive over to their office in Seri Kembangan which is always jammed (at least of the few occasions that I was there). Parking was luckily free since I reached early and found a nice spot by the roadside. Otherwise, that'll be at least RM 8.
It's simple, really. Attend their 2hour sales talk on their health tourism product. No obligation to buy anything but of course, you'll make them happy if you do. We started off late since they gave 'brilliant' instructions. It wasn't an entirely new body of knowledge but certainly good for some people who don't see the need for annual checkups. No more having to justify my paranoia.
The catch with the free stay is it has to be during off peak season (no public/school holiday, weekends). Not a problem for me since I've days to clear. The problem was we attended the sales talk in Nov and had only 3months from then to use up the free stay voucher. Dec itself was a school holiday so that meant only Jan earliest. We had some other plans in Jan so Feb it was. Luckily we still managed to secure a booking right before the Chinese new year.
Of the few hotels available, we decided on Cameron Highlands since I've never been there and it would be nice to have a cold holiday in Malaysia for once. I thought it was Equatorial but Google says it's closed 😰Turned out that they rebranded the hotel to Copthorne few years back. At the entry, the sign says Copthorne but with a smaller line of Equatorial. Confusing.
Since neither of us were familiar with Cameron Highlands, this is what you get when you ask a guy for help to plan for a holiday at his hometown. According to him, it's of utmost importance to bring contraceptive because majority of his friends who went up usually would end up getting hitched not long after 😄Either planned or accident. Well, safe to say, I ain't adding to that stat.
If you're driving, it's advisable to go with at least a 1.5cc car as the road can get windy and steep at certain areas. You can either exit at Tapah (old road) or Simpang Pulai (new road). We took the former as suggested by Waze despite advise from the Cameron guy to take the other (but further) road. We didn't know how bad the road was until it was too late. While it isn't entirely non-paved road, some spots are uneven, with potholes and it was very windy all the way up. Depending on your luck, you could either do it Initial D style and drift all the way or end up hoping there's enough gap to overtake the inching lorry/truck in front of you. I think it was worse than our Pangkor drive. That had more traffic light but it moved quite speedily otherwise.
We didn't follow the itinerary closely but you should take note that the tea estates are closed on Mondays so plan around that if you're looking forward to green-fy your Instagram feed. Most of the suggestions given are pretty good leads except if you're looking for a hardcore adventure holiday. We were just some casual, laidback holiday makers, escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
Oh yea and because we got free stay 😉
