LaLa Chong, Kayu Ara

13556, Jalan Cempaka,
Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara,
47400 Petaling Jaya
There's one thing you need to know: there are two branches of this place. Both are not that faraway from the other. I personally don't much of a preference but if I have to pick, it'll be the Kayu Ara instead of Ara Damansara. Solely for its proximity to home.

While waiting for your main food to arrive, why not have some satay in the mean time? These were quite nice, lightly charred on the inside and not so thin that the meat would stick to the stick.

If there's one dish that's synonymous with this place, it'll be stir fried fern with chili tuna. Or at least according to my cousin.

So much so that it's almost like a must order. Otherwise, it wouldn't feel like you've been to Lala Chong. But they have other great stuff too that you shouldn't miss.

Unfortunately though, their xiong tong lala isn't one of those you would want to try here. Although the shellfish was undeniably fresh and kinda big, the soup just didn't have that kick to it. Lack of pepper, perhaps?

Another version using another species of shellfish. Still, the soup was just lacking that one factor. This one was definitely more spicy, thanks to the chili and ginger.

Their crabs are famous, if not for their cheap affordable price. Do you like it dry or wet? This is with salted egg yolk. It was quite nice albeit dry on the inside.

Or maybe you want to really taste the grab, then you should go for the grilled version. It doesn't get anymore original than this.

The wet version would be in butter cream gravy. Here's a tip: even if you have finished the crab with much gravy leftover, do take it home and dip your toast in them. It's awesome.

The deep fried mantaos can certainly attest to that. Their sole purpose here is probably for you to wipe the claypot clean of the gravy.

No visit to any seafood restaurant is ever complete ordering fried squid. It's great that they don't drown the squid in thick batter that eating them would be like trying to dig for treasure.

However, I do feel that the batter could do better. The end result is crunchy but a wee bit too much?

Lala Chong is also famous for their grilled stuff fish. It's fresh and you get a hint of the garlic mixture. But after having tried this, it's difficult to appreciate any other version.

Fried chicken wing. Not exactly their signature dish but this is what a bunch of hungry men orders. Come to think of it, I was the only female 😐 We really need more women in IT. Please send your daughters to study that but none of that business IT or computer science crap ok.

Braised gourd in egg drop gravy. I don't know why but my niece really likes this. It's almost bland.

Braised seafood tofu. This one is more like it. They were rather generous with the mushroom and meat.
