Old Town

Yup, this is about that Old Town. Well, not the same branch but the franchise as a whole. They first rose to stardom with their white coffee, supposedly from Ipoh though these days, everyone claims that their coffee is from Ipoh but what really is an Ipoh coffee?

Perhaps, in everyone's eyes, Ipoh coffee is synonymous with coffee that's lighter than the usual coffee but darker than your iced (milk) tea. Over the years, many people have tried to ride on the Ipoh white coffee wave, most of them crashed and burnt. Old Town is no exception. It didn't help that it was also plagued with rumors of it being linked to a certain someone with less-than-favorable reputation. Well, I don't want to be thrown into a bin so lets not speculate so much since those are all hearsay and I don't want to be spending my time verifying that fact.

After all, quite like Old Town's coffee, it just isn't quite worth the effort. They (the coffee) somehow just doesn't have that extra oomph to it anymore. One after another, branches are closing down. It's hard to find an Old Town shop these days.

Their butter toast is as sad as it gets. Not only was the bread rather thin, the butter is as though it's some wartime ration.

The yau char kwai or char kway is slightly better but I personally feel that the fresh ones out of the big wok are the best. You have to get them either from the morning market or those night stalls.

Nasi lemak with curry chicken. The rice had a rich coconut milk flavor and sambal hit all the right spicy notes. Chicken itself was not bad though I think it may have gone on a diet as it was quite thin.
