Review: Lan Je, Kota Damansara

Famous for their cheap steamed fish, I finally got the opportunity to try this joint out. Used to think that it is located in the main Kota Damansara area where Sunway Giza is but it is actually much further down the road. Like much further down.

Is it going to be worth the trip? Lets find out.

Although it was close to 9pm when we arrived, the place was still packed to the brim. Guess everyone likes the idea of hot steamed fish on a rainy night.

I am probably slow to jump on this cheap steamed fish bandwagon (most of everyone I know has already tried it T_T) but this is what happens when you are not a chio bu. Nobody takes you out for (free) meals. fml.

First thing the captain asked was, "one or two fish?"
Since there were only the two of us and we wanted to try other dishes, one it was.
Next question was, "normal or extra spicy?"
Given my dinner date's lack of tolerance of spicy food (fml), we got the pussy normal version.

What you get is a medium (some may say it is small) sized fish that's been steamed before it's delivered straight to your table. Topped with loads of chopped garlic and bird's eye chili (fancy name for cili padi), this is a dish that is not date friendly as you'll end up smelling like a vampire's worst nightmare. But it was a good dish, thanks to the freshness of the fish and as pungent and strong the condiments are, it doesn't quite mask the sweetness of the fish.

The gravy or soy sauce may be tad bit salty on its own but that's probably meant for you to eat with rice and fish. All in all, it wasn't that big of a disappointment. What would have been better is if they eased up on the garlic. Date or not, it was rather overpowering.

Nothing fancy here but quite a lazy mom's dish of egg with prawn. So lazy that they left the prawns as-is without chopping them up into smaller pieces. They could use a pinch of salt but I forgive the dish as the egg was crunchy around the edges.

Must have greens even if they charge exorbitantly because one must not just bullshit but also do proper shitting. Otherwise, constipation and no more food intake. That's sad. Or at least that'll make me sad. Among other things.
Thankfully, they weren't as generous with the garlic here so it's a kiss-friendly dish. Crunchy to the bite but it's hard to go wrong with greens.
