LGK turned me 32: A Laksa Pilgrimage

Jalan Kuala Muda,
07100 Langkawi

While researching on places of interest, this area popped up.  It is basically an entire stretch of road where food trucks are lined up, literally one after another. All of which are selling the same thing:
laksa.
You'd think that this is quite a lousy business model. Everybody is selling almost the same thing (laksa, roast chicken, rojak, cendol, ABC). But that's probably the highlight of this street. Situated between the beach and airport runway, you do get the occasional din from airplanes landing and taking off. Anyway, since it wasn't too far away from the hotel motel, we drove here for a quick bite.

Even if you don't want to eat, the view is pretty darn good too. The sunset is relaxing. The beach was relatively quiet, no bustling crowd. If you are there for the food, I'd suggest daytime as by nightfall, it can get rather dark and creepy. Unless if that's what you are looking for to be able to conveniently grope your date without being too obvious about it.

Maju Pak Jang Dzir
First truck we tried was this. Located almost towards the end, there weren't any other customers. That is usually a warning sign but it happened to be the only truck selling roast chicken too which totally turned me on. Sorry, the occasional protein craving can be quite a bummer. But at least it's better than sugar and carbs.

Sweet thick soy sauce. I don't understand it, given how sweet already Malay dishes can be but it probably answers why Malaysian topped the list of obese nation in this region.

Coconut shake RM 3.50.
It is basically ice blended coconut drink (and flesh and milk, I suspect). Rich and thick, quite a hearty and definite thirst quencher on those hot tropical afternoon.

Ayam golek madu or roast honey chicken.
It is nice that your companion understands the whole no-carb diet lifestyle and actually encourages it. So, it also makes sense to them when all you want is just meat, meat and more meat. Rice? Pfft. We are so not Asian in that sense but it also effectively renders me poorer for having to order more expensive food (meat) to make up for the lack of not-so-expensive ones (rice) to fill up the tummy.

This is almost by far the best roast chicken I ever had. Maybe even the highlight of the trip (apart from my birthday) as it was marinated well and roasted until well cooked but still retaining its juiciness. Only downside is it wasn't hot =\

Laksa utara RM 4.50
Very different from the Chinese version, it is spicy but the raw kind of heat, courtesy of the chopped raw cili padi. Love the thick soup that's chock-full of fish. The raw onion also gave it a nice contrast of flavor and texture against the noodle. A bowl of this is so welcoming on a cold day.

Cendol RM 3
My first time having this dessert in a cup. What you get is really coconut milk water with brown sugar topped with cendol. You can add on toppings e.g. corn, red bean. I still prefer mine in  shaved ice format.

Laksa Kaw Ikan Seafood Tip Top Langkawi.
Second truck we visited on another day. This one is located right at the end. Or depending on which direction you are coming from.

Most of the food here were prepared regular so the smell is so tempting the first time we passed by it that I made a mental note to try it out.

If you don't mind or actually like the idea of being diabetic, cendol is a good way to go.
But, being on a holiday also means to let lose (a little).

My version of rojak calls for thick dark sweet sauce with fruits. This is certainly not it but that doesn't mean it's a hate at first sight. Especially when there are so much of fried food involved.
Crunchy but definitely not fresh out of the fryer, the gravy was just so-so. I was slightly disappointed and have yet again been deceived by my senses.

As we had some time to burn before departure, we thought to have one last sinful  meal. What better way than to end it with the first thing we had? Not the same truck though. This one is located at the other end of the previous truck. Sorry, it was already too dark by then to take anymore pictures without it turning into some horror shot.

The laksa wasn't as thick as the first one but tasted great. It had more greens and less chili. The rojak had a refreshing crunch from the raw turnip. I like the deep fried sotong that went well with the gravy. Sweeter but nicer than the second truck.
