Review: Uptown Hawker Center, Damansara Uptown
If you are lucky enough to find a (free) parking spot in this neighborhood, buy a lottery because with the opening of The Starling, it has become very difficult to find a spot even during the weekend. It used to be only during the weekday. Thankfully (or not), the mall does come with a parking lot though I'm not sure how big/many spots there are.
While many restaurants and cafes have come and go, most of the stalls here have remained the same. This one, operated by a Chinese man, serves up stir fried seafood for a majority Malay customer. Hence, it wasn't so surprising that their stir fried squid ended up looking like that. Not overly spicy but definitely oily and rubbery. Almost beyond the point of my tolerance for squid.
Another similar concept stall but serves Chinese fried rice. No lard, no pork obviously. Still a commendable effort. Would have been great with some sambal.
There are two yong tau foo stalls here, both at opposing ends of the food court. Go for the one where there's a queue as it's the more famous of the two. For a good reason too. The MO is simple: queue up, pick the items that you want into a plate, tell the man/guy the type of noodles, curry, wait for your food to be ready (a minute or so depending on how much you took), collect and pay. Simple right?
The fried items are fried to order while the boiled ones are boiled again before serving. I love their curry which isn't too spicy but you can have it with the brown sweet sauce if that tickles your fancy.
Remember this place? They still do serve the same Western fare. The menu hasn't changed much. Neither has their prices. The portion has downsized but only by a bit. Can still get a hearty meal from here. Just wash it down with a drink.
Or if you are feeling ravenous, go for their chop with a side of spaghetti. It turned out to be quite good.
They also have the chicken chop in fried version. I don't know about you but I'm quite averse to chicken that's been fried to look like this. Like it's been fried but hasn't. The lack of crispy skin makes me have a trust issue with them. Still, my friend assured me that it was good.
Lamb chop is one of the more expensive things on their menu and they executed it quite well. However, it's difficult to get it wrong. Marinate the chops with some salt and pepper. Grill or pan fry it until cooked. Serve. Best to get those with a sliver of fat around so that it'll caramelize and give the meat more flavor. I know I talk like I know what I am talking about but really, that's all you need if you've got some good meat.
How else would you finish off a dinner here if not with a bowl of ice kacang? Love the condensed milk finishing on top.
