Review: Rekindle

Jalan SS2/64
Petaling Jaya

I've heard about this cafe for awhile now but never tried it until recently. The thing is, when you bake, you will be aware about the cost that goes into making a cake. Flour, sugar, eggs, they all don't cost (that) much. No doubt, it is labor intensive depending on the type of cake. The idea of paying above RM 10 for a slice of cake is just too atrocious for me.

Which is why, going to cafes is an opportunity to splurge in the name of socializing. Come to think of it, I've never gone to mamaks with my girlfriends before. We would usually go to restaurants or cafes.

I've heard of good things about Rekindle so it felt right to suggest this place for dessert. Cakes to be specific and cakes is what Rekindle is famed for. The variety of cakes here can be quite dizzying. Not even Secret Recipe can rival them. La Manila may come close but ever since their branch in Aman Suria closed down (no pun intended), it's not a surprise because their cakes were a major letdown for a cafe that had been around for ages and cakes were supposed to be their forte.

Rekindle serves many cakes; they can be categorized broadly into normal cakes, cheese, mille crepe. Ranging from RM 11.90 and above, one good thing is they have good variety and flavors that you don't get from elsewhere. Thus, no cookies and cream, black forest, basically none of that boring stuff. If you want to stick to the tried and tested, this is so not the place.

Hence, this is how a slice of salted caramel and bacon bits ended up at our table.

Coming to RM 15.80 after service charge (you order at the counter, take a seat and they'll deliver it to you), it has that typical creamy sweetness of mille crepe. The saltiness isn't as pronounced as it's balanced out by the 'bacon bits'.
We both agreed that while it has the savory flavor, 'bacon bits' is a misnomer because it resembled pork floss more. Coincidentally (or not), there was a pork floss shop just few doorsteps away. This was a unique combination but not totally mind-blowingly awesome.

As epicuro didn't have a comprehensive dessert list (the usual brownie, affogato etc only), we hopped over to Rekindle that was just few steps away. POKC was nearer but the girls were more interested to have cakes so maybe POKC next round.

It was still early in the night when we arrived and the place wasn't packed. There were few other tables but those had already settled down. As we browsed through their selection of cakes, we were rather undecided so the waitress behind the cashier asked if it was our first time. Technically, it was my second and their first. One thing we agreed was that the waitress left much to be desired in her customer service skill.

Sure, she did the right thing in offering suggestions but it felt more like she was trying to get us to get off her back and that she could return to doing whatever she was before our arrival. Heck, we didn't even ask her for anything as we discussed among ourselves on what to order. Seriously, in this day and age, with social media to do marketing and generate publicity, is that the sort of attitude that you want to give?

But then again, there's no such thing as bad publicity.
Think: Paris Hilton. Kim Kardashian.

For our party of 5, we ordered 2 + 1 slices of cakes. Oh plus a red velvet macaroon as the birthday cake.

Tiramisu Kahlua RM 15. The closest I could think of is Pastry Culture as you can really taste the alcohol in each bite. The booze hits you quite immediately but not enough to knock you out. But then again, this is coming from someone who can barely hold her drink so it may be an exaggeration. The crunchy nuts on top provides a nice contrast to the slightly spongy cake with a slight hint of cheese. Definitely a tiramisu that is a notch above the rest.

Banana pecan RM 11.90. Some found this to be too sweet while my taste bud didn't quite agree to that. What is good though is how the banana flavor isn't so strong. A good ratio of the fruit and nut. The cake could have used with some warmth to enhance its deliciousness even further.
Like me. On cold nights. Lonely nights.

Cheese cake. Not sure about the price as this was an additional order. The prices mentioned above isn't including the service charge.

Ms Sourpuss waitress was probably thrilled to know that we finally ordered her suggestion. Turned out that despite her Justice Pao black face (it's a Cantonese expression for someone who sulk so much that their face is a frown), she was quite right to up-sell this cake.

A plain cheesecake relying solely on the ingredients, it shone well with cheesiness while the layer of crust underneath provided a contrasting texture in each morsel. What was missing is just a nice cup of joe.

If I had cash to splurge or socializing to do, Rekindle isn't such a bad place. Hopefully Ms Sourpuss has cheered up since then.
