Review: Oldboy (2013)
The remake of a remake, Oldboy is a tale of revenge and patience. To what extent would you go for the sake of repaying back a bitter debt? Having not watched the original, many touted this as a poor remake of the Korean remake but I find that it isn't so bad. The plot twist in the end was definitely a good one. Albeit twisted. Sick. Still, a good movie nonetheless.
Starting of a bit slow, the movie makes you wonder how bad can things be.
But not for long. Action starts rolling soon enough but the fight scenes are somewhat unbelievable. Come on, 1 man versus 10odd young men. Even if the latter aren't that strong or well built, why do they wait for one of their fellow comrade to be smashed to the ground before attacking the lone man? I don't quite believe in fighting etiquette i.e. you must have a fair fight, man to man, one on one. The real world can't work like that. Otherwise, gangs shouldn't watch movies so much to learn their fighting skill. Utterly useless when you allow your opponent to regain strength.
Apart from that, the movie also has juicy bits (read: naked hot chick) courtesy of Elizabeth Olsen. Yes, from the same Olsen twins family. To be honest, given how family friendly the twins were (now one of them is/was shagging someone old enough to be her father), I didn't expect full frontal nudity from her. Her acting skill was not bad either though her boobs were certainly more memorable. Oh and Josh Brolin? Quite impressive as well as the man bent on vengeance.
