Review: Restoran AhWa, PJ

Jalan 14/48 (off Jalan 222)
46100 Petaling Jaya

My father used to buy this for us on his way back home, touting it as one of the best in town. Surprisingly, 2decades later and it's still thriving. People are still raving about it. Perhaps after being a PJ citizen for the past 8 years (omg, has it been that long??), it may be a little too late but like they say, better late than never though I doubt that this place would close down soon unless if the owners decide to and not from the lack of business.

Come on, it's been operating for 20years, do you think they don't have what's required to keep going?

The main attraction here is their hokkien mee that's cooked using wood fire instead of gas which supposedly gives the dish a wok hei (loosely directly translated from Cantonese: wok spirit). I don't deny that the noodles were cooked well, each coated generously with the sauce (and oil, unfortunately). You can request for additional fried lard to make this even more sinful. One thing that didn't work out for me was the noodle was served warm. Not hot like it just came out of the wok. They could have pre-cooked and left it there until someone made an order (unlikely as ours took awhile to arrive). Maybe their wok hei isn't strong enough?

Well, I don't know but I'm guessing it would fare better if you did a take away and reheat it in a microwave. Don't forget the chili sauce. Not only are they good on their own, it also serves a vital purpose of making you not want to gag from the overdose of oil in the noodle by masking the oily taste with spiciness.
