If memory serves me right, their first branch is at Paradigm Mall and what a crowd it gathered. Unlike Thai food that has become very widely available, Vietnamese food is slowly starting to make a mark on Malaysian soil. Pho Vietz looks set to join the ranks of Pho Hoa and O Banh Mi by serving up both the famous baguette and pho. What is it that makes a baguette a banh mi and not just another sandwich? Is it that slightly crunchy crust? Or the airy loaf inside? Perhaps, the filling is what differentiates it from Subway sandwich? Either way, the Vietnamese certainly makes it harder on my no-carb diet 😟
Vietnamese coffee with milk RM 7.90
If you are to compare it to your local kopitiam coffee, this is definitely way more expensive. If you are to compare it to your hipster coffee e.g. Starbucks, this is also still quite pricey when you calculate it down to the ml per RM factor. However, I admit that it is definitely a few notches better than ah cheong coffee and definitely smoother, less sweet than Starbucks. Yes, I would have it again, to reward myself for something. Just to make it a special occasion, ya know?
Hue style spicy beef noodle soup RM 19.90
Flipping through the menu, I was torn between this and the more traditional beef noodle. Then there were also the rice dishes that came with curries and stews. Somehow this won because it's got my noodles and chili in one bowl. Not quite original Vietnamese food but it does taste close enough.
The noodles are thicker, similar to lai fun. So smooth that you can slurp it up. For me, the soup wasn't very spicy but a little more of their chili sauce did the trick and it made me sweat towards the end. As to why the copious amount of scallion, one could only guess. Still, I did enjoy this. Only thing is I wished that they had sliced the beef thinner so that it's easier to eat and cooks away in the hot soup.
Famous Vietnamese Baguette RM 11.90
Like any decent Vietnamese joint, their bread was excellent and held the almost soggy filling well. For an Asian take on a French bread, it was a curious combination. There's no denying the Asian flavors in there, thanks to the Chinese parsley. You also get some of the sliced meat patty. Almost strange. I didn't quite enjoy it but simply because of the parsley.
