Review: Taman Selera PJ Old Town, PJ Old Town

Jalan Othman,
PJ Old Town,
46050 Petaling Jaya
It's almost safe to say that this is the most popular attraction on this food court. Run by a Chinese couple, they have been at it for some time. Their ice is very finely shaved, drizzled with just the right amount of condensed milk and gula melaka. I do wish that they used proper actual gula melaka but it's difficult to find any outside of Malacca.

If cendol  sounds a little too sweet or you need something more filling, there are few others available, depending on the time of the day.

For snacks or something light, you can opt for the toasted stuffed bean curd skin. I like its crispy skin on the outside while the filling inside is a bit too sweet with julienne cucumber and bean sprout in a rojak sauce.

The popiah is also quite wet on the outside. Since this isn't on my regular channel, I don't really know if it's great or good or bad.

If spring roll and stuff bean curd are not enough, you can get full meals. Or build one.

Char kway teow Penang style. Cooked by a Chinese man but tasted borderline mamak.

Stir fried thick meehoon with beef. Interestingly good. It was on the dry side with the beef being unfortunately somewhat overcooked.

Moonlight noodle or yu kwong hor. It's a direct translation for stir fried kway teow with a raw fresh egg throw in before serving. The idea is to cover the egg with the noodle and let the heat work its magic. Although this one isn't as good as Mei Yen's, it was still quite good. Portion is on the large side as well.

If you want something homely, give this Hakka food stall a shot.

As the name suggests, you can order different types. While they aren't awesomely good, it is better than those franchise stuff.

Another famous Hakka dish, it's braised pork with black fungus. It tasted quite nice but the portion was quite small. Not worth the money.

Not one of the famous old timer, this was a slightly different type of stall but it looked interesting.

Simple setup. Maybe can bring those simpletons here for a date. But not those youngsters these days. They would probably scoff at the thought of eating in a food court.

Chicken chop with mushroom sauce. One of the rare times when chicken chop doesn't mean the chicken is deep fried. It's great that they actually cut up actual potatoes to fry up. You can tell by how the fries aren't quite uniform. The meat was well marinated and paired well with the sauce.

These are from another stall which I didn't have a chance to snap. Also because I didn't do the ordering.

Black Sweet Vinegar Pig Trotter . Infamous as a confinement dish, I don't think I would truly appreciate this dish. One good thing is the meat's been cooked until tender and long enough for it to absorb some of the soup. Not advisable to eat on its own as the taste can become overpowering.

My fave pork pepper soup. However, this one was more pepper soup but at least they were generous with the bean curd skin.
