A day in Malacca

What do you do when you are itching to get out of town but don't want to go too far away? Well, you head to Malacca. There are quite a lot of things to do there and it's quite impossible to fit everything into one day. However, if all you are up for is just some random sightseeing, window shopping and soaking in the tourist life, Malacca is your perfect destination.

This is their river. You can do the full tourist experience by opting for the ferry ride. Not sure how much it costs or what is included in the ride but for your sake I hope that it's not hot and smelly. My visit here few years ago left me with an unmemorable stench that became memorable for all the wrong reasons. Fortunately, the weather was very permitting that day with lots of cloud and occasional gust of wind. So, no smell.

If you are hoping for a full post on what to see, eat and do in Malacca, sorry. This isn't it.
All we did was just grabbed some food, walked a lot at Jonker Street, headed back home.

I did say it's a one day trip.

The drive from KL took roughly an hour and we arrived at an odd hour. Too late for lunch, too early for dinner. So, an ais kacang seemed apt since we parked just beside the shop anyway. Nothing like sweetened melting shaved ice to cool down after a nice drive.

That got us fueled up for a slow walk around the river and across the streets with the old buildings. Lately, most of my trips involved more looking, soaking in the experience with my senses instead of trying to capture everything with my camera. Hence, the lack of pictures. It felt a bit more liberating without the need to snap at the perfect angle and just enjoy the moment. But, of course I do feel a bit regret later for not taking more pictures for memory keepsake.

Jonker street has been given a facelift and there are now dedicated open spaces with food stalls. We literally munched our way, stopping whenever the need to refuel from all the walking raised. This is the deep fried seafood tofu. I think it was a bit too soft on the inside, need more of the fish paste to hold it together.

Dinner was grilled lamb. I was slightly disappointed because although the lamb was just roasting away, the meat wasn't hot. At least the flavor makes up for it. Slightly gamey but not a big deal if you're used to lamb.

In the end, we went back home with nothing new but a happy tummy and memory.
