Review: Ye Sing, Ipoh

Jalan Dato Haji Megat Khas,
Taman Bandaraya Utama,
31400 Ipoh, Perak

One of the newer shops (as compared to the rest in town), this place has offered the same stuff since they came into operations. Goes to show how you don't really need to think of new fancy business plans if you got a good thing going on.

For me, the main highlight of my Ipoh trips is the coffee. Call me old fashioned but nothing beat the taste of iced coffee that's been roasted to perfection in that perfect ratio of caffeine and milk. Best of all, it costs a fraction of your hipster coffee (that pales in comparison). Sure, they may not have as much variety but if a man can stay married to the same woman for decades, why can't you have the same coffee then?

The other thing that Ipoh is famous for would be curry noodles. For some reason, my hometown has always been synonymous with noodles. Chicken noodle soup, curry noodle soup, noodle this, noodle that. Rice is seeing a surge in the past decade but when people dine out, it's almost always for noodles. Rice is meant to be cooked at home. Or at least that's the impression I got.

Unlike the Klang Valley version, Ipoh's curry has more punch to it. Not as thick, it doesn't mean that the flavor's lacking.Instead of the dry version, I opted for the soup disregarding the risk of ruining my white shirt. My parents like them soup curries enough that they could just drink the curry up on its own. Some places would happily obliged to adding soup, some not as.

The noodles are typical of the Ipoh version: smooth, slurp-inducingly good. The curry isn't too spicy but certainly not for the faint of heart.
