Movies: Nymphomaniac Vol I & II

Everyone has probably watched this. Or at least all the guys have. If you have not, well, here's your lucky day.

However, I do recommend watching it in a private space or where people won't mistaken you for publicly enjoying porn because this is quite what this film is about but with a story line. Porn with story line. Now that I am very well acquainted with that genre of film but that's something rare, isn't it?

Stacy Martin play the title character that's known only as Joe. Nudity is plentiful and she does have a rather nice body so it helps to pass time though that's probably what most males look forward to and there isn't little of that. Christian Slater plays Joe's father and although it is a rather pivotal role in the development of the story, he is rather unremarkable. Or perhaps just plain overshadowed by his on-screen daughter.

There are too many men in the film and it is difficult to list them all. Obviously, Shia LaBeouf deserves a special mention as he turned out to be the one to tame the shrew, so to speak. Uma Thurman is almost unrecognizable as the woman whose husband left her for a younger woman who used him for sex and nothing more but lulled him into a false sense of relationship.

Towards the end of the first film, we are slowly reintroduced to the older Joe who had been playing narrator. Charlotte Gainsbourg is the jaded older Joe who realizes that her obsession is taking her into a downward spiral. And this is one of those films that you best binge watch. Not exactly for the sex scenes but the story line does develop in an engaging manner.

The second movie is not as beautiful as the first because there isn't as much of Stacy Martin but more of Charlotte. However, it is a rather befitting closing to the tale. From a beautiful story, you slowly start to empathize with Joe's character and how she makes herself out to be a bad person.

Despite it all, she managed to turn her life around in a way she best could. Perhaps it was retribution for the ending scene where she lost the two things she had going on in her life. Still, one has to applaud her courage and fighting spirit.

Maybe that's how we should all live. Make the best of everything.
