Baan Rao, Aman Suria

Have you stayed in a place long enough to witness its history unfolding? Not that I am that old or have stayed in PJ for that long, it's strange to be able to tell stories of particular locations.

Baan Rao used to be a Western joint which closed down (or revamped into its current state). Somehow, it doesn't feel like Thai cuisine is faring any better as there's a For Sale/Rent sign right under its signboard. Maybe feng shui not so good?

Stir fry paku with belacan and minced pork RM 20
This one started the dinner on a fiery note after a rather long wait. Lots of meat as well as chili and garlic but nothing hot white rice can't fix.

Hanglay pork belly curry RM 28
You get chunks of pork belly which depending on how lazy you are, that may or may not be a good thing. Personally, I'd prefer if they cut it to smaller pieces and cooked it until tender. Or not as hard. Surprisingly, this wasn't as spicy as the veggie ๐Ÿ˜…jl did find it to be a bit salty but I ate it with rice so not an issue for me. The curry is not your usual Indian or Chinese curry. A little sweet with spices but not like the sweet Japanese curry either. Oh, also unlike the typical Thai green curry. I haven't tried enough of Thai red curry so can't compare it with that.

Seafood tom yum regular RM 25
They were very generous with the oyster mushroom and squid. Aptly so as among all the dishes, this was the spiciest. So much so that jl blamed this for the paku's not-so-spiciness while tg gave up drinking the soup on its own but chose to drench his rice with it ๐Ÿ˜‚Still, if you're a glutton for (spicy Thai) punishment, this one's right up your alley. I wouldn't say its sour but then again, it was really spicy that it was hard to tell.

Red ruby RM 7
Last but not least, my fave Thai dessert. The best thing is the very ultra finely shaved ice. The worst thing is the lack of water chestnuts. Either way, it was a very much welcomed respite from all the earlier heat.
