Although my father is a proud Teochew lang, he never really taught us anything about it except for the occasional swear words in his fits of rage. As such, when he recommended this place for lunch, it was quite a surprise.

Yam rice and plain porridge. The former was fragrant from the yam and hint of onion, maybe even some pork. The latter is as plain as it gets as the porridge is meant to complement the main dishes. Unsurprisingly, it's also known as the sick/poor/grounded man's meal.

Kway chap: you either like or you don't. I'm.... trying to be impartial. Think of it as the bigger version of kway teow in a diluted bah kut teh sou.

Braised combo meat. Duck, chicken and pork with tofu and egg, great to order to sample everything on their menu.

Dry wantan mee. the bits of fried shallots on top lends a certain sweetness to the noodles. not quite the usual wantan mee but good in its own way. There's no meat in here so do order some on the side unless you're going for a vegetarian meal.

Wantan in soup. Nothing special and probably not worth to order here.

Braised ear. During my younger years, my father would always order this. It didn't entice me enough to give this foreign looking meat a try. Look at that white line in the middle. The texture is not crunchy nor chewy or even soft. Yet, after awhile, it does grow on you. Definitely much easier to take up than intestine.

Or-nee or yam paste with ginkyo nuts. A very thick and sweet paste. Would probably be good with gwailo coffee.
