Review: Shopgirl
Before Homeland, after Romeo+Juliet, there was Shopgirl. Claire Danes play the bored the title character with such an ordinary posse that it is hard to believe she is the very same bipolar agent in Homeland. Not that I have watched this political thriller but friend who did commented how crazy her character is in it. Another friend commented that she is too pretty to play the heroine, Mirabelle in this movie. I find that she did it quite well.
Almost your typical love story, the story revolves around 3 characters with other smaller ones that don't have much screen time but does contribute to the plot. It is in essence the story of a girl who longs for love and eventually finds it dropped at her doorstep (almost quite literally) unexpectedly. What ensues after that is not a whirlwind romance, but a sweet one tinged with sorrow.
After watching it the second time years after the first, it is not hard to say that this is one of my favorite movies of all times. There is no climax, no sexy scenes, in fact, the lines are relatively straightforward, if not downright boring. However, the magic lies in the story itself that is cringe-worthy (not in the romantic, PDA manner) and also makes you empathetic towards the characters at the same time.
If ever your other half finds you annoying for having to spell every single thing out for you e.g. reassuring his love, building the future together, just watch this movie.
