Review: Ayam Penyet, One Utama Food Republic

I don't usually eat in the food courts because the food is usually boring, if not tasteless. However, One Utama's Food Republic that has been operating for few years now do have some surprises. Back in my First Avenue days, trekking all the way to this part of town is worth it for the Arab food which has since closed down. There are other choices available but sadly, most of them are not exciting. Too commonplace.

However, when you are eating out alone, the food court is quite your best friend because no worry of having to leave your table unattended, no worry of hogging tables because chances are, there are probably equally lonely alone people there like you too.
This time around, I opted for an Indonesian delicacy. My first experience with ayam penyet  is during my Bali trip. It's essentially deep fried chicken that's been cooked in a pressure cooker to render the bones brittle so it's edible. Without breaking a teeth or two and it was awesome.

There are set meals to make it a complete meal. Given that it's in One Utama, prices are somewhat affordable. Unless if you want to keep fast food into the equation. Each set here is about RM 15.

I ordered the fried chicken set with rice and fried tofu. Portion is just right though it would have been nice had the chicken been bigger with more flesh. The tofu is a somewhat strange one. Perhaps I am just not used to eating fried hard tofu whose blandness was only saved by the sauces.

Don't be fooled here. Those crispy bits are the leftover fried dough which is rather addictive. The chicken was crispy but not freshly fried so you don't get them hot. All in all, it was a rather enjoyable Indonesian meal even if it's not the real deal. Cheaper than having to fly to Bali, I must say.
