BM Yam Rice, Publika

Upper Ground Floor,
Food Village, Publika,

Between Bahasa Malaysia and Bukit Mertajam, my bet is on the latter for what BM in this stall's name stands for. Tucked away in Publika's Food Court Village, you can see a large pot of soup by the cashier, beckoning for you to try them. And try you should.

Their yam rice sets are surprisingly affordable at less than RM 20.

Yam rice set with:
  • hard boiled egg and bean curd skin stewed in soy sauce
  • pork and preserved vegetable soup
  • steamed chicken with medlar seed
This really kept me full, thanks to that big bowl of soup. Although it's a plain soup with nothing much except for bits and pieces of the preserved veggie, it was fantastic because it's hot with the right ratio of sourness to the peppery taste. They didn't go easy with the chicken as it wasn't all bones, even came with a mushroom. It had a slight wine taste to it, perfect with the rice.

For a stall to have a dish in its name, of course it was great. Pieces of yam were cooked together with the rice so they're soft to the bite. You can say that it's a little bland on its own, dry even but that's where the chicken and soup comes in. Definitely a great meal.

But if you're looking for awesome yam rice, Klang is the place to go. It's funny how my father used to tell tales about going to certain places after school and it's still around. Well, this one happens to be one of them. It's a good 2decades (at least) and they are still as popular.
