Review: Epicuro, Damansara Utama

An early birthday celebration for a girl friend, someone suggested The Ship which is at the same neighborhood but I balked at the idea. Come on, what day and age are we living in that you'd go to one of the oldest steak establishments in the country to celebrate the birthday of someone who's not even 40years old? If it was with my folks, sure but girlfriends? None of my girlfriends are even touching 40...... yet.
Thankfully, they agreed to my suggestion of coming here instead. In recent times, Damansara Utama or Uptown or See Hoy Chan's cash cow has seen an explosion of cafes and epicuro is one of the pioneers. Given that they survived up till now, they must be doing something right. Or laundering money. I don't know so lets find out =D
Located just right beside Vicchuda, it has that quaint cafe atmosphere. I know how black is hip and yellow bulb is so hipster but they all make it hard for amateur photographers such as myself to take a good picture.
This place is more of a Western food joint with some caffeine buzz.
The menu has quite a lot to offer from starters to appetizers though variety within each isn't much. One thing for sure though, the prices are quite affordable.
Flat white RM 10. Not mine, so no comment.
Walnut and almond salad RM 14.90: Romaine lettuce, rocket, carrots, tomatoes and a red wine honey vinaigrette with croutons, glazed walnuts and toasted almonds sprinkled with grana padano cheese.
When this first arrived, we were rather amazed by the portion. Then, it turned out that the plate was quite large and shallow. Still, the lettuce was fresh and crunchy. Dressing had a nice citrus-y kick to it. I don't recall the walnuts being glazed though. Overall, a nice start to dinner.
Spaghetti carbonara RM 18.90: spaghetti in mascarpone sauce and bacon bits, topped with a slow poached egg.
The other place that I know of which serves carbonara in the same way is Three Little Pigs and my lunch date then was a little concerned about salmonella. Thankfully, either my dinner company was unperturbed by the possibility of vomiting their guts out while/and shitting their pants off or they don't even know the dangers of eating raw yolk as they happily lapped this up. Actually, one of them took half the yolk before mixing the remaining yolk into the pasta.
Like every other cream based pasta, this is one dish best eaten when it's still hot. Surprisingly, it turned out to be not very cheesy or even heavy. Just right on the cream factor and saltiness from the bacon.
Pork chop RM 28.90: pan roasted pork chops with croquettes and a mushroom cream sauce.
No croquettes but they did give potato salad which was so-so. The chop itself was slightly tough and dry. It could have used more of the awesome sauce which was quite creamy with chopped mushroom.
Chicken cacciatore RM 25.90: whole chicken thigh braised in marinara sauce, black olives and mushrooms served with
In pasta, you have the few main sauces of cream, tomato, olive oil (aglio olio). Personally, pesto falls under the last as it has neither cream nor tomato to speak off. Which is why this dish is quite confusing. On the bottom, you have a bed of pesto pasta which they (rightly) lightly sprinkled (for the lack of a better word) with the pesto. It is topped with the fried whole chicken thigh that's been deep fried and smothered with marinara sauce. Don't get me wrong, both the pasta and chicken were great. Just not together.
Like you and your ex who dumped you though you really loved her.
Or is that just the story of my life?
